PPWR
Implementation Using Impulse Sealing
Starting in August 2026, the PPWR will introduce new packaging requirements across the European Union (EU).
Discover how to successfully tackle the sealing challenges created by the shift to more sustainable and recyclable materials using impulse sealing of ROPEX.
ABOUT MONO-MATERIALS
Mono-material packaging is becoming increasingly important because it is much easier to recycle than packaging made from multiple materials. Since it consists of a single material, it can be sorted and processed more efficiently, helping to keep valuable resources in the recycling loop. As a result, more manufacturers are switching to mono-material packaging for a wide range of products. This transition is being driven by regulations such as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) as well as companies’ own sustainability commitments, all aiming to create a more circular and resource-efficient packaging industry.
NEW PACKAGING MATERIALS REQUIRE GREATER PRECISION
The use of recyclable and sustainable packaging materials results in new sealing characteristics, as these materials may be more heat-sensitive than conventional materials. Traditional sealing technologies, such as constant sealing, may struggle to process these materials consistently.
Common challenges include:
- Inconsistent seal quality
- Material damage
- Increased scrap rates
- Higher production costs
Impulse SEALING as a solution
Thanks to the precise and controlled application of heat, it enables reliable sealing of recyclable and single-component films while minimizing energy consumption and material waste. As a result, impulse sealing is particularly well-suited for processing thinner, more sustainable packaging materials without compromising seal quality, shelf life, or production efficiency.
With ROPEX impulse sealing systems, you can:
- Set the temperature precisely
- Adjust the sealing time individually
- Optimize sealing pressure according to the material
The result:
- Consistently high sealing quality
- Repeatable and reliable seal
- Safe processing of a wide range of packaging films
- Reduced material waste
- Optimal adaptation to future packaging materials
PAPERBASED MATERIALS
In addition to mono-material packaging, paper-based packaging is becoming increasingly important for sustainable packaging solutions. To provide the necessary barrier protection, these materials typically include a thin plastic coating while keeping the plastic content as low as possible.
The lower the plastic content, the easier the packaging can be recycled in existing paper recycling streams. However, thinner plastic layers are also more challenging to seal reliably.
Impulse sealing is particularly well suited for these materials because it applies heat precisely where it is needed, enabling strong, consistent seals while protecting the packaging material.
MATERIAL TESTING
Ensure that your packaging materials meet the requirements of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Ordinance (PPWR) and deliver reliable sealing performance. Our seal testing helps you understand how new and more sustainable films perform under real-world production conditions and provides precise recommendations for your specific application.
When transitioning to recyclable, mono-material, or paper-based packaging solutions, our laboratory tests determine the ideal sealing parameters to achieve consistent seal quality and support a successful transition to more sustainable materials.
Benefit from having your packaging materials tested under controlled laboratory conditions and receive a detailed report containing all relevant sealing parameters and documentation, as well as application-specific recommendations for reliable sealing performance.
